Frequently Asked Questions

What is ListingCheck.org?
ListingCheck.org is a "careful second opinion" tool that scans a listing (job, housing, vehicle, or product/service) for patterns worth double-checking. It uses a transparent, rule-based approach and shows what triggered each flag (with short evidence snippets).
Is ListingCheck.org saying a listing is definitely a scam?
No. ListingCheck.org does not make a definitive fraud determination. It highlights signals that often appear in deceptive listings and helps you decide what to verify next.
What do the risk levels mean?
LOW risk — No strong scam indicators were detected by the current checks. This doesn't guarantee safety—just that nothing obvious triggered.
MEDIUM risk — One high-confidence red flag or several softer warning signs were detected. Slow down and verify details before sharing info or sending money.
HIGH risk — Multiple high-confidence red flags were detected (often financial or identity-related). Treat this as a strong warning to verify independently and avoid any irreversible payments.
What are "HARD" vs "SOFT" flags?
ListingCheck.org uses two types of signals:
HARD flags = high-confidence patterns that are commonly linked to fraud (example: untraceable payment methods, upfront money requests).SOFT flags = context indicators that can be suspicious but sometimes appear in legitimate listings (example: urgency language, vague details).HARD flags are weighted more heavily so the system avoids "panic" from stacking minor signals. Why did it flag this listing?
Each flag includes:
- a plain-language label- a short explanation- a short evidence snippet showing what matchedYou should never have to guess "what triggered that."What does "Previously Flagged" mean?
If you see a yellow "Previously Flagged" badge, it means other users have submitted the same (or very similar) listing for review. The badge shows:
- When it was first reported
- How many times it's been flagged
- The domain (if from a URL)
This is a community warning system—it doesn't prove a listing is fraudulent, but it means multiple people found it suspicious enough to check. What if a legitimate listing gets flagged?
That can happen. The checks are intentionally conservative, but no automated system is perfect.
If a legitimate listing triggers a flag:
- Treat it as a prompt to verify, not a verdict.- Look at the evidence snippet and ask: Is this actually present and concerning?- Use the "What to do next" steps to confirm legitimacy safely. What if something risky is NOT flagged?
Also possible! Scams evolve constantly. ListingCheck.org only catches what its current checks are designed to catch.
If your gut says something is off:
- pause- verify independently- avoid sending money or sensitive infoHow do I use it: URL vs pasted text?
You can submit either:
- A URL: ListingCheck.org will try to fetch the page and extract readable text.- Pasted text (recommended): If a site blocks automated fetching (common on some job boards), paste the listing text directly for best results. If you paste text, the tool analyzes that text and does not fetch the URL.Why can't it fetch some pages?
Some sites require a real browser to load content or block automated requests. When that happens, use paste.
(Behind the scenes, the fetcher is also designed to avoid unsafe or private/internal addresses.)
Do you store my listing text or URL?
ListingCheck.org is privacy-by-default.
We do NOT store your full listing text. Here's what we do:- During analysis: Text is processed in memory only
- High-risk listings (score ≥6): We create a cryptographic hash (one-way fingerprint) and store:
- The hash (NOT the original text)
- Risk score and flags
- Listing type
- Domain name (if URL)
- Up to 500 characters of text preview
- Timestamp
Why store hashes?
To power the community flagging system. If multiple users submit the same suspicious listing, we can show a "Previously Flagged" warning to help others.
Can the hash be reversed to see my listing?
No. SHA-256 hashes are one-way—they cannot be reversed to recover the original text.
What about analytics and monitoring?
We use privacy-friendly tools:
- Umami Analytics — cookieless, no personal tracking, country-level stats only
- Sentry Error Monitoring — catches technical errors to improve the app
For full details, see our Privacy Policy.Should I paste sensitive personal information?
No. Do not paste:
- SSNs or government ID numbers- full bank account/routing numbers- one-time codes (2FA/OTP)- passwords- private documentsIf sensitive info is present in a listing, you can redact it before pasting.Do you publish a public "scam list"?
No. ListingCheck.org is not a "name and shame" site, and it does not publish a public database of listings.
Keeping raw data private:- reduces defamation and takedown risk- makes it harder for scammers to test whether they're "showing up"- supports better data quality over timeCan you remove a listing or correct a result?
The results are informational and based on what was submitted at the time. If you need something corrected or have a concern, contact us with:
- the listing type- what you submitted (or a redacted version)- what you believe is inaccurateWhat should I do if I got a HIGH risk result?
A few safe defaults:
- Don't send money (especially gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers).- Don't share sensitive personal info.- Keep communication on the original platform until identity is verified.- Verify using independent sources (official websites, published phone numbers, in-person viewings).ListingCheck.org will also show "What to do next" suggestions based on the kinds of flags detected. Is this legal advice?
No. ListingCheck.org provides informational guidance only. If you need legal advice, consult a qualified professional.
For full terms, see our Terms of Service. How can I help improve ListingCheck.org?
If you find:
- a scam that wasn't flagged, or- a legitimate listing that was flagged incorrectly…send a redacted example and what happened. This helps improve the checks and reduce false positives.Disclaimer
Informational only — not legal advice and not a scam determination. Verify independently. ListingCheck.org is not responsible for losses or decisions based on these results.
